WHAT IS ICAN?
ICAN is an acronyms for The Intitute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria. It is a body that brings together professional Accountants and determine what standard of knowledge and skill are to be attain by persons seeking to become member of the Accounting Profession. The institute also secure the establishment and maintenance of records of fellows , associates and bonified Accountants that can practices.
WHY DO I NEED ICAN?
Accountancy is an attractive profession. It gives those that are willing to make a positive impact in the job market an excellent ride. For those who hold good qualification in the profession, getting a good job in the global market is not a hurdle. As every organization needs the services of a good Accountant. To be listed among the best accountants and seen as a professional, you need to be chartered. The only way to become a Chartered Accountant in Nigeria is to enroll as a student in The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, ICAN. The following steps are necessary and important for those who have the desire to become student or member of the institute.
CLASSES OF MEMBERSHIP
The following are the classes of membership that are available in the institute.
1. Associate Member - ACA
2. Fellow Member - FCA
3. Register Accountants - RA
HOW TO REGISTER
Registration is done online. Those who want to write the examination must register as a student with the sum of Seven Thousand Naira. (N7, 000) paid as ICAN registration fees to any of the designated Zenith Bank where you obtain a Pin Voucher. The voucher which contains a pin code gives you access to complete a registration form at the website address which is normally indicated on the pin voucher.
EXAMINATION TYPES
The Institute set-up two (2) types of examination. They are:
1. Accounting Technician Scheme (ATS)
2. The Institute’s Professional Examination.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR ATS STUDENT
1. Five (5) credits passes including English Language and Mathematics in the West African School Certificate Examination, General Certificate of Education or Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination in not more than two sittings.
2. National Certificate of Education (NCE) from any College of Education.
3. Ordinary National Diploma of any Polytechnic recognized by the Council of the
Institute
4. Any other qualification that is acceptable by the Institute.
ATS EXAMINATION
The ATS Examinations takes place in March and September each year. Dates of the examinations are advertised in the national dailies and appropriate forms are obtainable at some designated banks after paying the stipulated fees. The is divided into Parts I, II and III. Each part is made up of four (4) subjects.
ATS EXAMINATION CENTRES
The examinations are normally held throughout the country in the following centres : Abeokuta, Abuja, Ado-Ekiti, Akure, Benin-City, Enugu, Ibadan , Ilesha, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Lagos, Maiduguri, Owerri, Port-Harcourt, Sokoto and Warri.
ADVANTAGES OF ATS
Candidates stand to gain the following after qualifying as ATS graduates.
i) They will be formally admitted as Associate Members of the Association of Accounting Technicians Scheme and use the title AAT after their names.
ii) They may elect or be elected to serve at the association’s level
iii) Their qualification is recognized by employers.
iv) They may enroll for an HND or B.Sc. programme in Accountancy in some higher institutions of learning.
v) They are permitted to enroll for the Institute’s Professional Examinations.
vi) They are granted full-exemption from the Foundation Examination of the Institute and thereafter proceed to write the Intermediate, Professional Examinations I , II and III
PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
In order to register as a student with the Institute, an applicant must hold a qualification not below the followings:
a) The degree of any University or Higher National Diploma of any Polytechnic recognized by the Council of the Institute.
b) ATS Final Certificate
c) Any other qualifications hereafter to be approved by the Council of the Institute.
APPLICATION FOR REGISTRATION
The registration procedures are similar to (ATS) procedures. When the registration form is unsuccessful, it may be returned to the candidate who will be advised on what to do.
DATES OF EXAMINATIONS
Professional examinations are conducted in May and November each year. Any candidate who is not duly registered as a student will not be allowed to sit for any part of the examination. Candidates are expected to pass each stage of the examinations in full before proceeding to the next stage. Examination duration is 10 years from date registered.
EXAMINATION CENTRES
The examinations are normally held throughout the country in the following centres : Abeokuta, Abuja, Ado-Ekiti, Akure, Benin-City, Calabar, Enugu, Ibadan, Ilesha, Ilorin, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Lagos, Maiduguri, Onitsha, Owerri, Port-Harcourt, Sokoto, Warri, Uyo and London (UK).
STAGES OF EXAMINATION
i) Foundation - 3 subject
ii) Intermediate - 4 Subjects
iii) Prof. Exam. I - 4 Subjects
iv) Prof. Exam. II - 4 Subjects
v) Prof. Exam III - 4 Subjects
